Nurturing Stronger Beginnings: Empowering Healthier Babies Through Unity
The Desoto County Stork’s Nest is an initiative of the March of Dimes, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, Psi Beta Zeta Chapter and Precious Pearls Foundation working together for stronger, healthier babies. Stork’s Nest is an incentive-driven prenatal health promotion program designed for low-income pregnant women. This initiative, a collaboration between Zeta Phi Beta Inc. and the March of Dimes, encourages women to schedule and attend prenatal care appointments while actively participating in prenatal education classes. The program underscores the importance of early and consistent prenatal care and empowers women to make informed choices for a healthy pregnancy, ultimately contributing significantly to their overall well-being and the health of their babies.
The Stork’s Nest prenatal classes offer informational and educational materials in both English and Spanish to assist clients and their partners in taking care of themselves and their babies during and after pregnancy. The Stork’s Nest prenatal learning curriculum is designed for clients to learn at their own pace over a three-month period.
The project is in keeping with the sorority’s and foundation pledge to contribute to the health and welfare of families, children, and youth. It is also intimately tied to the mission of the March of Dimes to prevent birth defects and infant mortality. With over sixty years of success, March of Dimes is a national leader in the funding and promotion of research, education, community services and advocacy to ensure that babies are born healthy.
“…I found this to be an excellent program. One of the things I learned was to reach out reach out to family and friends for help with the baby and housework instead of trying to take it all on myself. The information was easy to understand. The leaders treated me with respect, helped me with my problems, knew the topics well and encouraged me to ask questions…”

“…The ladies were non-judgmental, encouraging, drew me in and allowed me to feel more comfortable expressing myself by sharing their personal life experiences with me. Each session provided different valuable information. Sessions two, three, four, and eight were extremely helpful to me personally….
…At graduation, I used my points to shop for baby clothing and supplies…”

“…I thoroughly enjoyed going to the Stork’s Nest each week. We discussed many topics, but the one that stood out was that I should carry my baby 39 weeks plus, unless it was medically necessary to deliver earlier. The ladies treated us with respect, knew the information well, allowed us to share our experiences, and was available to me after class when necessary. I feel the leader is here for me if needed. We were encouraged to bring our family members as support. I really enjoyed graduation…”
